"When I paint, all my senses connect to the here and now and my hand becomes a seismograph. It's as though I have an internal melody that governs my gestures and the unique writings that are revealed are improvised, like lines of life."
Born in 1980, Benoit Sjöholm lives and works in Villejuif near Paris. As a child, Benoit was inspired by the works of the Hungarian-French artists Judith Reigl and Simon Hantaï, who were friends of his grandparents. Studying graphic design and working as a freelance art director for 15 years forged an indepth connection to typography and graphic signs, which have since been at the heart of the artist's creations. Not surprisingly, Benoit devotes his painting to writing and its evocation. His approach focuses on gesture, governed by a certain given rhythm, revealing a raw, yet abstract writing. Dictated by one and the same energy, the latter captures a unique moment of creative life. Like a seismograph, the painting becomes the recording, the trace of the living in perpetual evolution. It is a search for spontaneity within an imposed framework.
