"I like to think my paintings evoke a sense of time. There is an organic character to them, tracings of the past - and each one belongs to a broader storyline."
Julien Rubat, born in 1980 in Chambéry France, is a visual artist who favours large scale, abstract paintings, using paper and acrylic on canvas. Through the accumulation of layers and the creation of meticulous structures, his work can be seen as both physical and meditative. As a result, the often complex patterns and movements seen in his paintings are balanced by an overall sense of calm. Characterized by a unique imprint approach and effortless sense of continuity in his body of work, Julien's paintings intrigue with their ability to play with the perception of time. In a recent shift towards minimalism, his latest series features bold, monochromatic colours that contrast with a white or neutral background, accentuating the intricacies of his compositions.
With an academic background in information technology, Julien has lived in Paris and California and currently resides and works in Chambéry, opting for the serenity of the French Alps as his studio base. In addition to receiving fellowship and having held residency at Vermont Studio Center, Julien's resumé of exhibitions includes Opera Gallery (Paris), Curve Line Space (Los Angeles), SFMoma (San Francisco) and Art Center College of Design (Pasadena). His paintings can be found in private collections in Los Angeles, New York, Frankfurt, Singapore and Paris.
